This collection of essays focuses on the way blurred boundaries are represented in pre-modern texts and visual art and how they were received and perceived by their audiences: readers, listeners, and viewers. According to the current understanding that opposing cognitive categories that are so common in modern thinking do not apply to pre-modern mentalities, we argue that individuals in medieval and pre-modern societies did not necessarily consider sacred and secular, male and female, real and fictional, and opposing emotions as absolute dichotomies.The contributors to the present collection examine a wide range of cultural artifacts - literary texts, wall paintings, sculptures, jewelry, manuscript illustrations, and various objects as to what they reflect regarding the dominant perceptual system - the network of beliefs, worldviews, presumptions, values, and norms of viewing/reading/hearing different from modern epistemology strongly predicated on the binary nature of things and people. The essays suggest that analyzing pre-modern cultural works of art or literature in light of reception theory can lead to a better understanding of how those cultural products influenced individuals and impacted their thoughts and actions.

The Merovingian centuries were a foundational period in the historical consciousness of western Europe. The memory of the first dynasty of Frankish kings, their origin myths, accomplishments, and failures were used by generations of chroniclers, propagandists, and historians to justify a wide range of social and political agendas. The process of curating and editing the source material gave rise to a recognizable 'Merovingian narrative' with three distinct phases: meteoric ascent, stasis, and decline. Already in the seventh-century Chronicle of Fredegar, this tripartite model was invoked by a Merovingian queen to prophesy the fate of her descendants. This expert commentary sets out to understand how the story of the Merovingians was shaped through a process of continuous historiographical adaptation. It examines authors from across a millennium of historical writing and analyzes their influences and objectives, charting the often-unexpected ways in which their narratives were received and developed.

Voici la réponse apportée par l’élite des jeunes générations de médiévistes français (avec l’aide de quelques illustres anciens) à ce que l’on appelle aujourd’hui la « World History ». En déplaçant le regard à l’échelle mondiale, il devient possible de briser notre manière de voir l’histoire toute centrée sur l’Europe. N’est-il pas absurde de parler de « découverte » de l’Amérique ? Or, dans les années 1400, au cœur du XVe siècle, les hommes ont vécu une première mondialisation, et cette expérience inédite constitue le chantier immense de cet ouvrage.Le premier volume retrace examine successivement les structures politiques de l’ensemble des terres occupées sur la planète et les écrits de tout genre qui ont marqué cette époque.Le deuxième volume esquisse ensuite un récit planétaire de l’histoire des hommes.
